How to build UTM links for a launch

  1. Paste the page you want people to land on, such as your homepage or pricing page.
  2. Name the campaign once, for example launch-week, and keep the same name on every channel.
  3. Choose the channels you will post on. Each gets its own source and medium.
  4. Copy each link into its post, or download them all as a CSV for your launch kit.

A naming scheme that keeps reports clean

Analytics groups visits by exact text, so Twitter, twitter and x become three rows. Pick one name per site and stick to it. The presets here use lowercase site names as the source and the standard mediums Google Analytics 4 sorts into channels:

Where you postutm_sourceutm_medium
Launch sites and directorieslarklaunch, producthunt, hackernewsreferral
Social postsx, linkedin, reddit, threadssocial
Newsletters and emailsnewsletter, outreachemail
Paid adsgoogle, facebookcpc or paid_social

Use utm_content to tell apart two links in the same place, such as the pinned post and a reply, and keep utm_term for paid keywords.

Reading the results

In Google Analytics 4, open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition and set the dimension to Session source / medium or Session campaign. Plausible, Fathom, Simple Analytics and PostHog show UTM values under Sources or Campaigns. Compare signups, not just visits: a channel that sends fewer people who stay is the one to repeat.

Planning the whole launch? The launch planner schedules this step for you, and the launch directories list shows where else to share your tagged link.

Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a link, such as ?utm_source=x&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=launch. Google Analytics, Plausible, Fathom, PostHog and most other analytics tools read them and group visits by source, medium and campaign.

Which UTM parameters are required?

Use utm_source (the site, such as x or newsletter), utm_medium (the type of traffic, such as social, referral or email) and utm_campaign (your campaign name, such as launch-week). utm_term and utm_content are optional: content is useful to tell two links in the same post apart.

Should UTM values be lowercase?

Yes. Analytics tools treat "X" and "x" as two different sources, which splits your numbers. This tool lowercases values and turns spaces into hyphens by default.

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

No, as long as your page has a canonical link pointing to the address without parameters. Use tagged links in posts, emails and profiles, not in your own site navigation, where they would overwrite the original source of a visit.

Can I add UTM parameters to my LarkLaunch listing?

Yes. Use a tagged link as your website address when you submit, for example with utm_source=larklaunch and utm_medium=referral, and every visit from your launch page is labelled in your analytics.
